In the world of computer networks, 'the act of downloading' or 'to download' simply means the act of receiving data by a local system from a specific remote system. To download also means the initiation of any data transfer.

Some of the most common examples of where a download may originate include an email server, a FTP server, a web server and other systems that entail similarity with the aforementioned ones.

A download also means any files that have been offered for downloading purposes or any files that have already been downloaded. The process of receiving any files received from a system is also referred to as the process of downloading.

As of the present days, many people working in different companies and business establishments are confused about the meaning of installing and downloading. In account to this, these people would often call their task as 'installing' when in fact, they are actually doing the downloading process or vice versa.

A More Forward Definition of 'Download'

The act of downloading data commonly entails the sending of the data to a particular end-user – anyone who is upstream from a particular provider. It is basically derived from the concept of streaming, indicating the acceptance or receiving a particular data that can be used immediately. A downloaded data can only be used if it has been received as a whole.

Additionally, when you intend to download something, it is important to note that receiving the data should not only give you the command to accept it but you should also consider saving the downloaded file for future uses. In this particular context, to download means to "Receive & Save."

Moreover, you should also understand that downloading isn't similar with transferring. When you receive a file or data from another storage device then that means 'data transfer'; on the other hand, when you receive files from the Internet then this is basically considered as 'download' process.
